Description |
Small collection of items relating to the artist William Hurd Lawrence and his family, notably his daughter Dorothy and her husband George Anderson. Includes 10 small drawings and/or prints; 7 individual photographs; 11 postcards, several with views of buildings at Historic Richmond Town; a certificate of William Hurd Lawrence's membership in the American Artists Professional League; a few items of correspondence; a group of blueprints, plans, and correspondence relating to the Anderson family home on Edinboro Road at Warwick Avenue (now Rigby Avenue), and its acquisition by New York City for a Fresh Kills improvement project; a newspaper clipping of William Hurd Lawrence's obituary; and a scrapbook in the form of a three-ring photograph album with green covers. The scrapbook contains news clippings dated 1922-1941 concerning exhibitions of William Hurd Lawrence's work in Vermont, New York, St. Andrew's Church, and the Staten Island Museum; his work and fame after his right hand was paralyzed by sunstroke; his students, including Miss Ruth Tysen and Eleanor Pettersen (seen in newspaper photographs), and exhibitions of their work; and obituaries of the artist from several newspapers. It also contains drawings and illustrations clipped from newspapers and magazines, some with printed dates in 1899; a 1929 article published in Psychology Magazine by William Hurd Lawrence concerning his stroke and work after the stroke; a brief handwritten biography of the artist; and a letter to Dorothy (Anderson) Lawrence concerning her father's work. William Hurd Lawrence (1886-1938) was a noted American painter and illustrator. In the 1930s he lived in the Lighthouse Hill neighborhood of Staten Island. |
