Description |
Handwritten letter regarding the Civil War draft. The letter begins: "To His Excellency Gov. Morgan. / My dear Sir / Our Town has been extremely pained by an act of yours. The appointment of Jacob Garretson Commissioner of the Draft has struck loyal men dumb. To know that the Capitol of the Nation was shaken; to learn that Cincinnatti [sic] was in imminent peril, and that the North was to be the scene of hostile conflict, and then to be told you had appointed a man to be Commissioner of the draft who has not had his equal in the Town, for his expressions of hostility to the North and his Sympathy for the South, was to us an act of great wrong..." The letter is signed by "Saml L Hopping" and mentions the town of Westfield, Staten Island. Inscription on the reverse: "1862 / Saml. L. Hopping / Sept." (Keywords: New York, Civil War) |
