Description |
This document is an invoice from the general store of Stephen D. Stephens in Richmond, Staten Island. It is handwritten on off-white paper which is folded vertically to form four pages. Inscription at the top of the first page: "Richmond County Dr / To J W Stephens." The invoice lists goods and services by date provided, from June through November 1865, with amounts charged. Items listed include postage, charges for sending messages, carrying papers, and gathering information from various individuals; the invoice also includes "Cash paid for scrubbing Privey," "Cash paid for Cutting & fitting Oil Cloth," and "Cash paid for Office Stool." At the bottom of the page is a signed statement regarding submitting the bill to Richmond County, sworn before Frank W. Conner. Ownership and History |
Stephen Dover Stephens (1808-1883) lived in what is now Historic Richmond Town's Stephens-Black House, and operated a general store which was attached to the house. The name J.W. Stephens on this invoice is for James W. Stephens, son of Stephen D. Stephens. |
