Ownership and History |
Mary Ann Pelton was born December 3, 1828, the daughter of Catherine Cortelyou (Van Arsdale) and Daniel Pelton. The family moved from Manhattan to Staten Island in the late 1830s or early 1840s. Mary Ann was 31 years old in 1860 when she married Alfred N. Duffie, a French soldier who came to the U.S. and became a brigadier general in the Civil War. After the war, the Duffies lived in Cadiz, Spain, where Alfred was U.S. Consul. They had a son Daniel, born in 1862, and another named August who died at the age of one month. After her husband's death in 1880, Mary Ann returned to her family's home on Staten Island to live with her sisters. She died on December 2, 1910, the day before her 82nd birthday. This portrait was donated to the Staten Island Historical Society in 1962 by Mary Ann and Alfred's granddaughter, Adele Duffie. |
