Ownership and History |
Jack and Hagar are described in this document as a negro man and a negro woman, but their ages and relationship to one another are not documented. Jack and Hagar were sold by the estate of Peter Rezeau (1738-1813) who lived in Richmond, Staten Island. Jacob Rezeau and Hosea A. Rezeau, who are listed in this document as executors, were Peter's sons. Peter's father, Jacob Rezeau, is believed to have built what is now Historic Richmond Town's Voorlezer's House, but it's not known if Peter ever lived there, as he would have been about 30 years old when the house was built. Peter Rezeau is listed in the 1790 and 1810 census for Southfield, Staten Island. His household in 1790 was 6 people (2 free white males, 2 free white females, 2 enslaved people), and his household in 1810 was 9 people (7 free white persons, 2 enslaved people). |
