Description |
Printed booklet, 24 pages plus front and back cover. Front cover is off-white with red printed inscription and black printed illustration. Inscription: "RIDES / AND / RAMBLES / ON / STATEN / ISLAND / By REAU CAMPBELL." The illustration shows a view of New York Harbor as seen from an elevated vantage point. The Staten Island Ferry terminal in Manhattan is in the foreground, Governor's Island is at left, and the Statue of Liberty is at right. Several ferries and other boats are in the water; Staten Island is visible in the distance. The title page has printed inscription: "RIDES AND RAMBLES / ON / STATEN ISLAND / By REAU CAMPBELL / [...] / PUBLISHED FOR / STATEN ISLAND RAPID TRANSIT RAILROAD. / 1889: / C.G. CRAWFORD, / NEW YORK." The book describes a ferry trip to Staten Island and further travel by train, buggy, walking, etc., and has sections on St. George, New Brighton, Sailors Snug Harbor, Livingston, Port Richmond, Erastina, the East Shore, Tompkinsville, Stapleton, Clifton, Fort Wadsworth, Arrochar, South Beach, the South Shore, New Dorp, Cedar Grove Beach, Court House (train station with stages to Richmond "during court-week"), Gifford's, Woods of Arden, Prince's Bay [Princes Bay], Tottenville, Historical Treasure (the Billopp House), the West Shore, and the Interior. It has printed illustrations in black, blue, green, and yellow interspersed throughout the text, and the final page has a map of Staten Island with Staten Island Rapid Transit Railroad, Staten Island Ferry, and Bay Ridge Ferry shown. Captioned illustrations of specific locations include The Casino, St. George; Old St. Mark Hotel, New Brighton; Snug Harbor; At Erastina; a Lawn Diversion (lawn tennis); the Old Tower, Arrochar; the Billopp House, Tottenville; the Old Mill, Clove Lake; and Old Moravian Church, New Dorp; also included are an uncaptioned view of the Staten Island Athletic Club boathouse, and other illustrations of locations that are not specifically identified.
