Ownership and History |
The business advertised on the upper portion of this sign went by various names over the years. In the late nineteenth century, it was known as the Old Staten Island Dyeing Establishment. Over the years, the business evolved from industrial textile dyeing to a large-scale textile cleaning service. It had offices at 98 Duane Street in Manhattan and in other cities as well, but its main industrial headquarters was located in West New Brighton, Staten Island, an area once known as Factoryville. The lower portion of the sign, though incomplete, appears to advertise another Staten Island business: the Tompkinsville menswear shop of George L. Egbert on Arietta Street. Mr. Egbert's shop was at 42 Arietta Street (the address listed on this sign) from 1886 to 1893, and at 48 Arietta Street from 1894 until 1922, when it relocated to 206 Bay Street. The original location where this sign was posted is not currently known. |
