Ownership and History |
Local residents took offense at New York City's decision to turn Staten Island's Fresh Kills meadow into a garbage disposal facility in 1916. Protests led to the facility's closure in 1918, but in 1948 it reopened as a landfill and remained in operation until 2001. |
