Description |
Alphabet sampler, silk thread on linen or cotton. Sampler has seven rows of alphabet letters and numbers in purple, yellow, white, brown, red, pink, and green. The name "Margaret Poillon" is stitched below the alphabet rows, with a script "M" below the name. The border is acorns or strawberries in pink, red, and green. There is a figural scene at the bottom, with a central diamond-shaped tree in yellow and green; the scene has squirrels, birds, and bees on each side in yellow, red, brown, green, pink, and purple. The letter "P" is stitched in the bottom left corner in green thread. The sampler has a variety of stitches, including cross stitch. (Keywords: New York) |

Ownership and History |
Margaret Poillon was born on Staten Island in 1793. She married James B. Garretson ca. 1824, and they had one daughter, Jane Elizabeth. Margaret died in 1876. This sampler was donated to the Staten Island Historical Society in 1967 by Margaret's great-granddaughter, Margaret Wandel Trundle Jacobi. |
