This photo shows immigrants who were temporarily held at the Quarantine station on Hoffman Island, just off the coast of Staten Island, New York. Immigrants who were suspected of having contagious diseases such as smallpox or cholera were detained until it was considered safe for them to continue on to Ellis Island. |
