Original glass plate negative. Interior view of a building in Annapolis, Maryland. Twelve men are shucking oysters; they stand in a row along the right side of the room. Alice Austen's handwritten inscription on the original negative sleeve uses the word "darkies," a derogatory term for black people, to describe the men in this photograph: ""772 / Stanley / 50 / skylight, dark / Darkies opening oysters / Fine day / W.L. / 10 A.M 10 secs / 50 ft / Tuesday Sept 25th 1894 / Annapolis." |
