Original glass plate negative. Interior view of Alice Austen's bedroom at Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Furnishings include a marble-topped chest of drawers with mirror, an upholstered chair, and shelves. Books, vases, an American flag, and other accessories are also visible. This image appears in the book "Alice's World" by Ann Novotny, with the caption "A haze of smoke hangs in the northeast corner of Alice's bedroom, apparently caused by the magnesium flash powder she ignited to take the previous picture. She was working her way around the room, recording each wall and corner." |
