Description |
Original glass plate negative. Seven men and eight women pose outdoors on the lawn near a tennis court in Staten Island. Many of the group hold tennis rackets. Alice Austen is seated at far left, and Sam Dix sits on the ground directly in front of her. Bessie Strong sits in the center of the front row (third from right), and Julia Marsh sits next to Bessie (second from right). Alice (Butler) Parmele sits third from left (wearing a dark color bodice and a tall floral hat). Charles Barton stands in the back row at far right. Bella Bourne sits in the middle row at far right, in front of Charles. The cable that Alice Austen used to release the shutter on her camera and take the picture is visible in the grass in the left foreground. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "No. 54 / Large group on tennis ground / About 1 1/2 secs 5.15 P.M Stop x / Thursday August 5th / 1886 / Threatening rain no sun."
