In 1896, Alice Austen's close friend Violet Ward published the book "Bicycling for Ladies," which provided instruction in all aspects of bicycling including proper riding form, bicycle repairs, and appropriate clothing. The book's illustrations were created from photographs taken by Alice Austen, with their friend Daisy Elliott as the model. This photograph corresponds to the "Bicycling for Ladies" book illustration captioned "Carrying the Bicycle," which appears in the book opposite page 32. |
