Description |
Original glass plate negative. A group of five men and eight women pose on the lawn near a tennis court in Staten Island. Alice Austen and her pug Punch are at far left, and Alice's friend Bessie Strong is seated in the center. Charles Barton stands in back at right. Julia Marsh and Sam Dix (wearing a straw hat) are seated next to each other on the ground in front right. The woman seated directly behind Julia is Bella Bourne, wearing a hat with feathers. The cable that Alice used to release the shutter on her camera and take the picture is visible in the grass in the left foreground, partially concealed by a tennis racket. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "No. 53 / Group on tennis ground / About 1 sec 5 P.M. No Stop / Thursday August 5th / 1886 / Threatening rain, no sun."
