Original B&W print. Men and women stand in groups alongside a small building, probably the clubhouse of the Staten Island Bicycle Club in St. George, Staten Island. Several people have bicycles. A woman leans out a window on the front of the building, and several people stand in the doorway. The corresponding negative for this print has the photographer's handwritten inscription on the negative sleeve: ""Cramer / Crown / 836 / Staten Island Bicycle Club Tea / Fine day, sun / W.L. 4.50 P.M / 60 ft / Inst / Tuesday June 25th / 1895." Photographer Alice Austen and her friend Violet Ward were the founders of the Staten Island Bicycle Club. The Staten Island Historical Society's archives contain a postcard invitation to the event seen in this photograph. The card reads "Bicycle Run, Staten Island Bicycle Club. The Staten Island Bicycle Club invites you to ride with them on Tuesday afternoon, June 25. Meet at the Staten Island Bicycle Club at St. George at 4.30 o'clock. The start will be made at 5 o'clock, to wheel for an hour and return to the club to the bicycle tea, a notice of which has been sent to you." The Committee members listed on the card include Miss Alice Austen and Miss Violet Ward. |
