Description |
Original glass plate negative. Group portrait of tennis players on the grounds of Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Eight men and 15 women pose on the lawn at the edge of the tennis court. Some are seated in chairs, some are seated on a large rug on the ground, and the people in the back row are standing. Several of the people hold tennis rackets; a woman in the front row holds a closed parasol. Trude Eccleston is seated in the center; next to her, on the right, is Bella Bourne. Seated next to Bella is Charles Barton; and seated next to Charles (at far right) is Alice Austen. The woman seated at far left is Sue Ripley. The woman seated in the row below and to the left of Trude (wearing a striped blouse and a boater) is Bessie Strong. The woman seated directly in front of Alice is Lou Alexander, and the woman next to Lou (wearing a striped skirt) is Julia (Marsh) Lord. Alice (Butler) Parmele is seated second from left in the front row (seen in profile facing the left side of the image). The man standing in the back row at right, directly behind Alice, is William Allaire Shortt. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Seed 23 / No. 328 / (23) / Group on my tennis ground / Just before a thunder storm, pretty dark / 6.20 P.M / Stop 22 / 3 secs / Perken Lense / Thursday July 11th 1889."
