Original glass plate negative. Interior view of the study in the home of Peter and Nellie Austen, the photographer's aunt and uncle, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A brick fireplace with a wooden mantelpiece is in the center of the image. There are bookshelves on the wall to the right. Furnishings include a desk and a rocking chair. Items on the mantelpiece include photos and a clock; more photos hang above. Two of the photos on the mantelpiece show the front of Peter Austen's house. One of the photos hanging above is portrait of Peter's mother (and Alice Austen's grandmother) Elizabeth Alice (Townsend) Austen. An adjoining room is visible through the open door at right. The photographer's initials are inscribed in the lower left corner of the negative: "E.A.A." The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "A&R / 40 / 265 / Uncle Petes study & fireplace / Good light / W.L. 2.30 PM / 12 secs 12 ft / Monday March 7th 1892 / New Brunswick." |
