Description |
Original glass plate negative. Alice Austen (left) and her friend Maria E. Ward (nickname Violet) sit on a bench outdoors on a lawn, looking toward the camera. They are posed in front of a vine-covered building. Alice wears a suit with large leg-o-mutton sleeves, and a blouse with a bow at the neck. Violet wears a knitted turtleneck sweater and a skirt, and she hold a pair of pince-nez glasses in her left hand. Both women wear berets with pompons. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Seed / [illegible] / No. 590 / Vi & E.A.A Canal trip costumes / Shade, with light, at M.E.W. / 2 P.M / P.L. / 3 1/2 secs Stop 22 / Sat. Oct 27th 1894." (Keywords: Self Portrait, New York) |

The notation "at M.E.W." in Alice Austen's inscription indicates that the photo was taken at the home of Maria E. Ward on Grymes Hill in Staten Island. The Alice Austen photograph collection contains seven glass-plate negatives taken while on a canal trip in Annapolis, Maryland, on September 24 and September 25, 1894, so this photo apparently shows Alice and Violet in their "canal trip costumes" after the trip was completed. |
