Original glass plate negative. Nellie (Munroe) Austen is seated in a rocking chair on a porch; she wears a striped cap and a dress with checked trim. She leans her head to her right and she looks directly at the camera. There is a folding chair at right. The location is not identified, but it is likely Bay Head, New Jersey. Handwritten in red at right edge: "10.28;" handwritten in the upper left corner: "18;" handwritten in red on reverse: "26." |

Ownership and History |
Nellie (Munroe) Austen (1855-1948) was the wife of Peter Townsend Austen. Staten Island photographer Alice Austen was their niece. This photo was most likely taken in the shore town of Bay Head, New Jersey, where Peter and Nellie and their children William Munroe, Elizabeth Patty, and Oswald Townsend vacationed during several summers in the 1880s and 1890s. |
