This photograph and the accompanying label text were created as part of the Indelible Memories documentation project. The Staten Island Historical Society partnered with photographer Vinnie Amesse to record images and statements from more than fifty individuals profoundly affected by the events of September 11 and their aftermath. The exhibition, "Indelible Memories: September 11 Memorial Tattoos Photographed by Vinnie Amesse," was displayed at Historic Richmond Town in 2003. Francis has been a police officer for over 15 years. He and his life partner, a firefighter, both reported to the World Trade Center on September 11. It was the last time they saw each other. |

In addition to a life partner, Francis lost 19 friends that day -- people from various walks of life. The towering figures on his tattoo are a firefighter and police officer together. The financial center buildings in the foreground symbolize his civilian friends. |
