Original glass plate negative. Beach scene, with a close-up view of three men in bathing suits posed sitting and reclining on the sand; the man in the center is smoking a pipe. The man at right is the photographer's uncle, Peter Townsend Austen. Several children are visible in the background. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Cramer / 50 crown / 843 / Mr Montgomery Uncle / brother / Fine day sun / W.L. Inst medium / 12 ft / 5.35 P.M / Sunday August 25th / 1895 / Bay Head." |

Ownership and History |
Peter Austen and his family visited the shore town of Bay Head, New Jersey, during several summers in the 1880s and 1890s. The man identified in the inscription as "Mr. Montgomery" is most likely John Howard Montgomery of Flushing, New York. "Brother" might refer to one of Mr. Montgomery's four brothers. |
