Description |
Original B&W print on cream cardboard mount. Front view of two stores at 849 and 853 Annadale Road, in Annadale, Staten Island. The stores are in the process of being raised during the railroad grade crossing elimination project. The store at left has a sign above the windows: "FOOD / MARKET / THE / GREAT / ATLANTIC & PACIFIC / TEA / CO / FOUNDED / 1859." A set of temporary wooden steps leads to the door. The building at right is Taub's Pharmacy; there are several signs in the window, including one sign with inscription "BUSINESS / GOING ON DURING / ALTERATIONS." Temporary wooden steps lead to the door; concrete blocks and bricks are stacked beside the curb. There are inscriptions on the photo at lower left and right (the inscriptions appear to have been handwritten on the negative): "751" and "12-24-39." An inscription on the reverse, added by a previous cataloger, identifies this as #849 and #853 Annadale Road raised to proposed grade, looking northeast, photo by V.S. Bent.
