Original B&W print. Diagonal rear and side view of the Britton Cottage on its original site in New Dorp, Staten Island. Much of the house is covered with ivy. A man stands in the tall grass near the house, looking toward the camera; he wears a suit and a hat. Several people stand and sit on the porch of the house, including a boy wearing a bathing suit with a large "T" on the chest. Ownership and History |
The Britton Cottage, one of the oldest surviving houses in New York City, was built ca. 1670. Among the house's many residents over the centuries was the noted botanist Dr. Nathaniel Lord Britton, who served as the first director of the New York Botanical Garden. The house was relocated to Historic Richmond Town in 1965. |
