Original glass plate negative. Augustine Minshall Hopper and Trude Eccleston stand side by side next to a tombstone which has the inscription "NOYES." Trude is smiling as she looks down at a small bouquet of flowers in her hands. Mr. Hopper holds a parasol above their heads. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Cramer / crown / No. 383 / Tombstone / Trude & Mr Hopper / approaching / Fine, bright day, in sun / W.L. / 9.45 am / 25 ft / Inst quick / Wed. Aug 3d / 1892 / Watkins NY." |

This is one of six photos that Alice Austen staged in front of a tombstone in Watkins, New York. She carefully positioned herself and her friends Trude Eccleston and Mr. Hopper to make a play on the name "NOYES," covering part of the name so that it showed as "NO" or "YES." The photos suggest romantic love and spurned affections. |
