Original glass plate negative. Diagonal front view of two houses on Union Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey; both houses have mansard roofs. The street is unpaved. In the foreground is the fenced front yard of Peter T. Austen, uncle of photographer Alice Austen. The young child standing next to the gate appears to be Peter Austen's son Oswald, who was age 6 in 1891. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "A&R / 40 / 239 / The Hills house & Mrs. Voorhees / Union Street house / Fair day / W.L. 60 ft 3 PM / Inst / Wed. Dec 16th 1891 / New Brunswick." |

"Mrs. Voorhees" is Sarah R. (Neilson) Voorhees, wife of Willard P. Voorhees. Mr. Voorhees was a lawyer and later served as a Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. |
