Original glass plate negative. Eight women are seated in a rowboat near the shore in Lake George, New York; a small wooden dock is behind them. Trude Eccleston is second from left, and Alice (Butler) Parmele is fourth from left (holding an oar, seen in profile). A girl sits on the edge of the dock. Two unoccupied boats, trees, and distant mountains are also visible. The photographer's initials are inscribed in the lower right corner of the negative: "E.A.A." The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Stanley / 35 / 639 / Big boat at the Butlers / Camp Andrews / Fine day / W.L. / 60 ft / Inst / 2.30 PM / Wed. "The Butlers" identified in the inscription are likely the family of Alice Austen's friends Alice (Butler) Parmele and Mary (Butler) Alburger. The Butler family lived in Clifton, Staten Island. |
