Description |
Original glass plate negative. Front view of Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Photo shows the lawn, the walkway, and the house's ivy-covered facade. An elderly man with a beard is seated in a rocking chair on the porch; it is most likely Alice Austen's grandfather, John Haggerty Austen. Near him is a pug, most likely Alice's dog Punch. A hammock hangs on the porch at left, and at right is a telescope on a table. The image is slightly out of focus. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Stanley / 35 / No. 414 / Our house from end of / front walk / Fine, sunny day / W.L. / 9 am / 60 ft / Inst, slow. / Wed. Sept. 6th 1892." (Keywords: New York) |
