Original B&W print with fabric backing and a paper tab at left (appears to have been part of an album). Front view of a two-story building on the boardwalk at South Beach, Staten Island. The building has a second-floor balcony over the entrance. Sign on the front of the building: "GARTNER'S HOTEL AND RESTAURANT." Gartner's Sanitary Baths are next door. There are piles of dirt in front of the building. An identical photo is dated 1915. (Keywords: New York City, Early Twentieth Century) |

Ownership and History |
This is one of a group of photographs donated to the Historical Society in 1952 by Edwin H. Skinner, who for many years was manager of the Staten Island Beach Land Improvement Company in South Beach. Gartner's Hotel was operated by Ida Gartner (1854-1919), who was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. with her children in 1899. |
