Original B&W print on a black cardboard mount with gold edges. Interior view of the Irving family home on Grymes Hill, Staten Island. View shows a large hallway with arched openings. There is a fireplace at right. Furnishings include a table and a tall case clock. Printed inscription in gold on the mount below the photo: "I. Almstaedt TOMPKINSVILLE, S.I." Handwritten label on the reverse of the mount: "Our House / Staten Island / About / 1891." |

Ownership and History |
This was the home of Ellen (DuPont) and Alexander Duer Irving. They purchased the home in 1885 and lived there until 1896, when they moved to "Sunnyside," the former home of author Washington Irving, in Irvington-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York. Washington Irving was a great-uncle of Alexander Duer Irving. The donor of this photo was the great-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving. |
