Description |
Original B&W print on a beige cardboard mount. Front view of a one-story house identified as the Winant-Oakley House on Rossville Avenue, corner of Arthur Kill Road, in Rossville, Staten Island. The house is built in three sections; the largest section, at left, has two French doors with closed shutters and a Dutch door opening onto a porch, with two dormer windows above. Two children stand near the door of the center section of the house. A wood split rail fence is in the foreground at right. The reverse side of the mount has handwritten inscriptions in two different handwritings: "Old Mean's House Rossville, S.I. N.Y. / built by Peter Winant who died there in 1758 / (see photo by Mr. Winant) -- / This photo by Louis P. Gratacap June 12, 1892 of / old house where Mr. John C. Thompson was born / in 1807. cor Shay's Lane & Arthur Kill Road / Gratacap presented it to Wm T Davis" and "Presented by Mr Wm T. Davis to the S.I. Historical Soc. Nov. 8, 1934."
