Original B&W print on a black cardboard mount. Group portrait in a dining room at Lazarri's Restaurant in Rosebank, Staten Island. Twenty men, all wearing suits, are seated at a long table, with nine men standing behind them. The table is set with plates, napkins, glasses, and silverware. The rear wall of the room is draped with a large American flag gathered up as bunting. Inscription in the lower left corner of the photo (very faint): "20th Annual Dinner at Lazzari's / of the Ten Mile Walking Club / Oct. 28th, 1912." Inscription lower right: "H. Kiener." Ownership and History |
The club was described in an article in the New York Times on October 29, 1911: "Sing the Joys of the Road. Ten Mile Walking Club of Staten Island Holds Its Annual Dinner. The Ten Mile Walking Club, an organization of well-known Staten Islanders, who have banded together for many years to promote the healthful exercise of walking, held its nineteenth annual dinner last night at the Atlantic Inn, Grant City...The members of the club take weekly strolls of ten miles, and there is not a highway in Richmond County that is not known to these enthusiastic pedestrians." |
