Original glass plate negative. Elizabeth Patty Austen (right) and Oswald Townsend Austen (left) are seated on a beach, probably at Bay Head, New Jersey. Elizabeth wears a hat with polka dots; Oswald wears a tall-crowned straw hat. There is a small pail in the sand next to Oswald. A house is in the background. Ownership and History |
Peter Townsend Austen (1852-1907) was the uncle of noted Staten Island photographer Alice Austen. This photo was most likely taken in the shore town of Bay Head, New Jersey, where Peter and his wife Nellie and their children William Munroe, Elizabeth Patty, and Oswald Townsend vacationed during several summers in the 1880s and 1890s. |
