Description |
Original glass plate negative. Interior view of the entry hall at Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. A staircase and an exterior door are seen at right; the door to the parlor is at left. The room is furnished with a Federal style sofa; items displayed on the walls include a mirror, a barometer, a clock on a shelf that has a carved gargoyle, framed prints, a painting, a basket, and a thermometer. A powder horn made from an animal horn hangs from the mirror, and a stirrup with a spur hangs on the wall to the left of the mirror. The wallpaper is in the Anglo-Japanese style. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Seed / No. 179 / Hall & staircase / Sun going in & out flashed light / 9.15 am Stop 5 / Dalh lense / 10 mins. / Mon.
