Original glass plate negative. Interior view of the parlor at Clear Comfort, the Austen family home in Rosebank, Staten Island. Furnishings include a sofa, a table, and an upholstered chair. Above the sofa is a framed portrait painting of David Embree Austen (Alice Austen's great-grandfather); an auctioneer's hammer is attached to the frame. The adjoining hallway is visible through the door at left. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "711 / Stanley / 35 / Our parlor sofa Grandpa / Austen's portrait / Fair light / D. / 11.45 A.M / 50 secs / 20 ft / Tuesday May 15th 1894." David Embree Austen (1784-1863) owned a prosperous auction house in Manhattan, specializing in "dry goods" (textiles and carpets). The portrait painting of David Embree Austen is now part of the Staten Island Historical Society collection. |
