Description |
Original glass plate negative. Front view of the home of Peter and Nellie Austen on Union Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is a 2 1/2-story shingled house with a fenced front yard. On the sidewalk a young boy sits on a four-wheeled velocipede and looks toward the camera. Two young children sit on the porch steps at far right, and a woman looks out from a second-floor window; she appears to be holding a small bouquet of flowers. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "Seed 26 / 411 / Uncle Pete's house / Bright but cloudy. / 9. A.M Stop 32 / 3 secs / P. lense / Sat. June 21st 1890 / New Brunswick, N.J." |

The woman standing at the second floor window appears to be Nellie Austen, wife of Peter Austen. The boy on the velocipede appears to be Peter and Nellie's son Oswald, who was 5 years old when this photo was taken. |
