Description |
Original glass plate negative. A street sweeper wearing a white uniform and helmet pushes a broom at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 48th Street in Manhattan. There is a lamppost on the corner behind him, and a watering can is on the sidewalk. The building across the street has a sign above the first floor: "STAPLE & FANCY GROCERIES." The photographer's initials are inscribed in the lower left corner of the negative: "COPYRIGHT 1896 / E.A. AUSTEN." The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription (the inscription also refers to negative 50.015.5956): "No 920 & 921 / Cramer / Crown / 920 Street sweeper with helmet / 48 St & 7 Ave / 921 Policeman 5 Ave & 23d St / 1.20 P.M / W.L. / 3.25 P.M 12 ft / Fine day, sun / Inst quick / Friday June 12th 1896 / N.Y."
