Original glass plate negative. View of a rural valley near Bennington, Vermont, with farm fields, houses, barns, and a small river as seen from a hillside. In the foreground on the left, Alice Austen's friend Julia Martin and Julia's stepmother Sarah (Schuyler) Martin sit on the hillside and look into the valley below. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "430 / Seed / 26 / Distant view of Mt.
