Small collection of items related to the dedication of Hero Park in Tompkinsville, Staten Island. Collection contains: 7 vintage photos, 2 pieces of correspondence, a telegram from Theodore Roosevelt, a newspaper clipping from the New York Tribune describing the dedication, and "Stenographic Report of the Dedication of Hero Park, on Decoration Day, Monday, May 31, 1920," containing transcriptions of the speeches presented at the dedication. The vintage photographs show views of the park, the stone memorial, and evergreen trees with a United States flag and a plaque near each tree. The correspondence includes two letters, one from New York Governor Alfred E. Smith and one from C.W. Berry, Adjutant General of New York, both addressed to Judge J. Harry Tiernan. The "Stenographic Report of the Dedication of Hero Park" is a 39-page typed document prepared by Thomas Baker, Stenographer, Tompkinsville. It provides texts for addresses given or statements provided by the following people: Monsignor Charles A. Cassidy, Invocation; Hon. William G. Willcox, Chairman; Mayor John C. Hylan, Louis A. Dreyfus, Esq.; Hon. Calvin D. Van Name, Borough President; Hon. Francis D. Gallatin, Park Commissioner; Rev. Dr. Edward A. Dodd; Hon. Montague Lessler; Hon. Biography and History |
Hero Park was dedicated May 31, 1920. A stone monument in the park holds a bronze plaque with the inscription, "THIS / HERO PARK / AND MEMORIAL / IS LOVINGLY DEDICATED / TO THE MEMORY / OF THE SPLENDID SONS / OF STATEN ISLAND / WHO SO NOBLY / GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WORLD WAR / 1917 -- 1918" and a second plaque with a list of names. According to the donor, the items in this collection came from the estate of Ellsworth B. Buck, the donor's uncle. Mr. Buck was a member of the United States House of Representatives in the 1940s. |
