Biography and History |
Ethel Gertrude Fowler (1884-1974) was a Staten Islander who was active in a variety of charitable service organizations. During World War II she served as the Chairman for Volunteer Special Services of the Staten Island Chapter of the American Red Cross. She remained active in the Red Cross after the war, going to national conventions as a delegate. From 1950 to 1952 Fowler was president of the Society for Seamen's Children, headquartered on Staten Island. Her activities in the immediate postwar era shifted from servicemen's needs to child welfare. Throughout the 1950s Fowler was also active on the boards of other welfare organizations, such as the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies. Fowler was also active in Christ Church (Episcopal) in New Brighton, Staten Island. She had been a member there since at least 1947, and was the first woman elected to the previously all-male vestry in 1969 at the age of 85. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters late in life, and she may have been actively involved in the Women's Suffrage Movement of the 1910s. |
