This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS226.000, Ward Family Papers. Original B&W print, cabinet card format on off-white cardboard mount with rounded corners. Portrait of General William Greene Ward; he wears a uniform with a cap and sword. He is standing with his right hand on his hip. Printed inscription on the mount below the photo: "Mora / 707 BROADWAY, N.Y." Handwritten inscription on the reverse: "Dec 1878." Portrait was accompanied by a typed inscription on a slip of paper: "General William Greene Ward / December 1878." (Keywords: New York City) |
Biography and History |
William G. Ward (1832-1901) was a noted Civil War general. In 1865 he built a mansion, which he named Oneata, in the Grymes Hill neighborhood of Staten Island. His daughters Violet and Caroline were friends of photographer Alice Austen. |
