Biography and History |
A Certificate of Canvass is the official record of the votes cast in an election. This certificate for a town election held in Middletown, Staten Island, includes a count of how many votes were cast, how many of those votes were won by each candidate, and copies of the official ballots used at the election. This particular election was widely covered in the local newspapers because the results diminished the influence of Staten Island’s long-time Democratic Party boss Nicholas Muller, who was connected to New York’s powerful Tammany Hall political organization. |
