This collection was assembled by the Staten Island Historical Society and contains a variety of materials related to the African American experience on Staten Island and elsewhere. It includes at least two folders of unique historic manuscripts (ca. 1802-1818), but the greatest bulk of the collection consists of published materials, clippings, copies, and research notes (ca. 1960-2004). Topics include the history of African American people in the United States, research into African American history at the Staten Island Historical Society in the twentieth century, notable black community leaders on Staten Island, slavery and manumission, and children of enslaved people.
