This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS226.000, Ward Family Papers. Original B&W print on an off-white mount. Portrait of Emily Graham (McKnight) Ward with her daughters Violet and Caroline. Emily is seated; she wears a dark colored dress with black lace veil or shawl. Her daughters lean against her; Caroline is at left, and Violet is at right. Both girls wear white or light colored dresses and are draped with garlands of leaves. Accompanied by a typed inscription on a slip of paper: "Mrs. Ward with Violet and Caroline." (Keywords: New York) |
Biography and History |
Maria (nickname Violet) and Caroline Ward were the daughters of General William Greene Ward and his wife Emily Graham (McKnight) Ward. The family lived on an estate named Oneata in the Grymes Hill neighborhood of Staten Island. The sisters were friends of Staten Island photographer Alice Austen. |
