This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS236.000, Richmond County Public Records. Handwritten document, titled "Election in 1836." The sheet contains columns headed (from left to right) for: candidate; office; number of votes in Northfield; number of votes in Castleton; number of votes in Southfield; number of votes in Westfield; total number of votes; majority. Handwritten inscription on reverse side: "Abstract of County / Canvass 1836" followed by a column of numbers. Candidates are William L. Marcy and Jesse Buel for Governor; John Tracy and Gamaliel H. Barstow for Lieutenant Governor; Morgan L. Smith and Frederick A. Talmadge for Senator; Abraham Vander[wyck?] and John DiRem[oir?] for Congress; John Garretson Jr. and Lawrence Hillyer for Assembly; and Cornelius W. Lawrence and Gulian C. Verplanck for Ticket Electors. |
Biography and History |
This document records the votes tallied locally in the New York State election of 1836. The columns at left list the candidates and the office they were seeking, followed by the number of votes per candidate in each of the four towns of Staten Island (Northfield, Castleton, Southfield, and Westfield) and a vote total. The column at right indicates which candidates received the majority. The two candidates at the top of the list, William L. Marcy and Jesse Buel, ran for Governor of New York State. Buel won on Staten Island by 12 votes, but Marcy won the election statewide. |
