Description |
This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS233.000, Transportation Collection. Invitation to the launching of the schooner yacht Meteor, with a separate invitation card for a luncheon afterward. A sheet of folded paper, with a colored and embossed motif of crossed flags at center top, has a printed inscription, "The Townsend-Downey Shipbuilding Co. / request the honor of your presence at the / Launching of the / Schooner Yacht Meteor / built for / His Majesty the Emperor of Germany / at / Shooter Island, New York City, / Tuesday morning, February the twenty fifth, 1902, / at ten o'clock." The item also includes a separate, smaller invitation card printed on heavy white paper, with a printed inscription, "The Townsend-Downey Shipbuilding Co. / cordially invite you to attend a / Luncheon in honor of / The President of the United States / and / His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Prussia, / to be given at the Shipyard after / the Launching of the Schooner Yacht 'Meteor,' / February the 25th 1902." |
Biography and History |
The Meteor (also known as Meteor III) was a yacht built for German Emperor Wilhelm II. The launching ceremony on Shooter's Island, just off the north shore of Staten Island, was attended by Prince Henry of Prussia, President and Mrs. Roosevelt and their daughter Alice, and other dignitaries. The event was captured on film which is held by the Library of Congress. |
