This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS122.000, Benedict Family Papers. Portrait photograph, cabinet card format on tan mount with printed reddish-brown border. Full-length portrait of Ethel Benedict Cox as a child. She stands leaning one elbow on a balustrade in front of a painted backdrop. She is wearing a bonnet or hat tied with wide ribbons, and a long plaid double-breasted coat with four large buttons, a round collar, and wide, turned-back cuffs. Printed inscription on the lower edge of the mount: "FREDRICKS, / 770 BROADWAY, N.Y. / 1891." Printed inscription on the reverse: "FREDRICKS' / KNICKERBOCKER / FAMILY PORTRAIT GALLERY / 770 BROADWAY / COR. 9TH STREET / NEW YORK." Handwritten inscriptions on the reverse in several different handwritings: "Mrs B.W. Cox. / 201 W. 81st St;" "b. 1887;" and "Ethel Benedict Cox / age 4." |
Biography and History |
Ethel Benedict Cox (1887-1980) was the daughter of Annette (Benedict) Cox and Benjamin Whitlock Cox. She married Richard R. Lytle in 1917. Ethel's great-grandfather, Samuel Ward Benedict 1st of Staten Island, established the well-known Benedict Brothers jewelry store in lower Manhattan in 1819. The store remained in business for over 100 years, operated by succeeding generations of Benedict family members. |
