Biography and History |
These papers are associated with a house which once stood at 3525 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island. The building was also known as the Ichabod Crane House for the resident whose name was given to Washington Irving's famous fictional literary character. Prior to its destruction in 1989, an exhaustive architectural study was performed though the Historic American Buildings Survey and housed at the Library of Congress. Elements of the structure were salvaged and remain in the collections of the Staten Island Historical Society at Historic Richmond Town. An article titled "The Ansley-Crane-Ferguson House of Chelsea Heights, Staten Island" was published in The Staten Island Historian, Volume 7 New Series, Number 2, Winter-Spring 1990, p. 13. The article contains sections on the architectural evolution of the house (authored by Russell T. Powell), the Ansley Family (by Charlotte Megill Hix), the Crane family (by Marjorie Johnson), the Ferguson and Minto families (by Marjorie Johnson), and efforts to save the house (by G. Lauren Elaine Baxter). |
