This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS114. Printed and handwritten stock certificate. The certificate has two engraved illustrations of whaling scenes. Inscription: "Staten Island Whaling Co. / No. 26 / PORT RICHMOND, February 27th, 1839 / Be it known that Paul J. Mersereau is entitled to one Share of FIFTY dollars in the / Capital Stock of the Staten Island Whaling Co. transferable only / on the Books of the Company by the said Paul J. Mersereau / or his Attorney on surrender of this Certificate. / Shares 1. $50. Wm [Morton?] Prest." In very small type at the bottom right: "Bowdon, Wright & Hatch, New York." Inscription printed along the left edge: "CAPITAL $200,000." The reverse side is blank. (Keywords: New York, Maritime) |
Biography and History |
The Staten Island Whaling Company was incorporated in March 1838. The firm was engaged in whaling and also operated a whale-oil processing plant in Port Richmond. The plant burned down in September 1841, and one newspaper account stated that the fire was thought to have been intentionally set. |
