Description |
Original glass plate negative. A group of nine men and five women sit and stand on and in front of a wooden fence. Many of them hold tennis rackets. Several of the men wear striped jackets and caps. Alice Austen sits in the center of the first row; she holds a tennis racket in her left hand and a small paper-wrapped box in her right hand. Trude Eccleston is seated on the fence in the back row at left, next to her future husband Charles Barton at far left. The original negative sleeve has the photographer's handwritten inscription: "No. 226 / Large group on tennis ground / Fine, clear day in shade / 1 sec Stop 22 / Perkin lense 4.30 P.M. / Friday Aug. 10th 1888. / Lake Mahopac."
